In the world of performing arts, too many organizations face a constant conflict between their most idealistic artistic goals and the realities of balanced budgets. The Else Borges Foundation for Arts Initiatives seeks to foster, within those organizations, a more balanced sense of fiduciary responsibility and artistic courage, and to think more ambitiously about both their social impact and the cultural self-esteem they bring to their communities. In the words of Daniel Barenboim, we at the Foundation firmly believe that “culture is not a luxury, it is not something only aesthetic. It is ethical. Human ethics are expressed truly in culture, in music, in opera, in theater.”
